A deck permit is required if the deck is attached to the house or if it is over 30 inches above grade. Check out the deck handout (PDF) for more information. Also, see the single-family lot guidelines (PDF) for standard setbacks from your property line.
Please note: Any plastic or composite decking must be approved. An updated list of approved materials can be found online.
Documentation required when applying for a deck building permit:
- Building Permit Application (PDF) - Including project valuation
- Construction plans - Including footing plan and materials
- Certificate of survey or site plan (PDF) - Showing proposed deck and all distances to property lines and other buildings
- Separate permit is required if there is electrical work
